Most of us already know what the boho, cottage, farmhouse, rustic and vintage styles are because of Joanna Gains, Liz Galvan, HGTV or simply because they are advertised in every home decor magazine and store around. Because of this, styles such as moody boho or black boho, (terms I like to use), Scandi (short for Scandinavian), Scandi-boho, eclectic, mediterranean or wabi-sabi aren’t so popular in the main stream home decor world just yet, therefore they may be new to some.
Today, I’m going to be sharing some of my favorite black boho style finds — similarly referred to as “moody wabi-sabi” finds in my decor world. But first, I’ll be explaining what black boho and wabi-sabi style is.
I myself didn’t even know what my style was referred to as for the longest time because I couldn’t seem to get past all of the popular styles to be able to find mine. Consequently, I have spent the last 7 years of my life typing “boho antique, boho distressed, boho cottage, Italy styled home, India vases and boho style, vintage wood style, or natural wood style boho” into my Pinterest search bar hoping for my home decor style to appear in the results so I could finally put a name to my look.
A few days ago, while trying to find a photo of a shelving unit I’ve envisioned my husband building for me for a few years now to show him, I searched “arched India styled shelving unit” and the words “wabi-sabi” appeared under a photo result. Although I’ve searched this term before and got different results, Low and behold, after searching wabi-sabi again, I found that I was indeed, finally one step closer to being able to label the home decor style vision I’d had in my head after all these years. (Although, the style is not an exact match, it’s the closest I’ve ever come, and I’m super excited about it!)
For my readers who don’t know what Wabi-Sabi style is, you probably aren’t alone. Wabi-Sabi is a popular aesthetic in Japanese culture. In Japan, Wabi-Sabi, in simple terms, means “flawed beauty”, furthermore, when referred to as a style it is represented as “beauty in imperfection.” (I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was a Japanese derived style, as I’d always thought I was envisioning a completely different cultural style, specifically an Italian or India look.)
The style represents the acceptance of imperfection and asymmetry as well as the appreciation of natural elements, roughness, simplicity and historical beauty. The commonly used wabi-sabi elements are wood, stone, clay, linen, paper mache, and ceramics. (Which is me to a tee!)
I’ll be talking about the general wabi-sabi style much more in my upcoming posts and eventually explaining the scandi, scandi-boho, eclectic and Mediterranean styles. So, despite my eager anticipated explanation of my love for the wabi-sabi style, I’m going to save that for later and stick to focusing on the moody-boho, black wabi-sabi style today.
I know, I know, a lot of confusion in the styles, however, it’s necessary to be able to establish the difference!
The style is exactly how it reads. Moody (dark) boho (bohemian) style, or moody (dark) wabi-sabi (beauty in imperfection), so, boho, or wabi-sabi style with moody in front of it would mean those styles with focused black or grey “moody” elements. These aren’t currently documented decor styles, but I can’t find a term for them, therefore I refer to any decor style that emphasizes black or darker colors as “moody.”
Firstly, I realized the other day while looking for neutral light toned boho wabi-sabi decor, that there are some beautiful moody elements out there that I’ve never recognized before.
Secondly, it occurred to me that while searching on Pinterest for decor, I rarely ever see black or dark homes because of the uprise in white and light styled home designs. While I’ve always loved light neutral toned colored decor, I’ve never had a problem finding inspiration online, but I can only imagine how difficult it must be for the boho black lovers to find blog posts or inspiring photos of the visions they have for their home.
Lastly, I am starting to add more black finds into my home, and nonetheless, I want everyone with a love for boho, cottage or wabi-sabi to feel welcome here regardless of their preffered color scheme.
So, ultimately, I decided to do something I’ve never done before, and I dug deep into the opposite side of my style spectrum and gathered some of the best moody boho / black wabi-sabi styled finds on Amazon for all of my moody styled readers.
I must admit, I fell in love with some of the moody finds myself and I even decided to add some to my cart – I need more contrast in my home and this is a perfect way to do so!
Although I am an Amazon associate, and I do make a small commission on anything purchased through my links, that’s not why I only post items from Amazon.
Honestly, Amazon has some of MY favorite home decor brands already, and most of the items I link are items I would search for and share anyways. I also do love some styles from other stores, but would like to get Amazon out of the way first, as there are SO MANY good products that I just can’t leave out. Additionally, in my upcoming posts I will also include finds from stores such as Target, Pottery Barn, West Elm, Wayfair, H&M, Ikea and more! But, please don’t think that I am sharing from Amazon only because I am associated with them, because I’m also associated with other brands, but I just haven’t gotten to them yet. Amazon truly does have some great hidden decor styles that I truly do recommend.
Lastly, my posting blogs about Amazon products is just a step in my process. I would never and will never post anything that I wouldn’t use and love in my own home. (A lot of the items I link I do have in my own home… or they are in my cart!)

Although I don’t prefer the black/moody style, I still do have favorites, AND do like a touch of black beauty in my home.
